HERBAL HIGHLIGHT
FRANKINCENSE
Boswellia sacra
Frankincense is a small evergreen tree (6 to 15 feet tall) native to tropical regions of Arabia and the Horn of Africa. It has been used for cosmetic and medicinal purposes since earliest times. It is frequently mentioned in the first five books of the Old Testament. One myth has it that God gave Adam gold, myrrh and frankincense  to console him for losing the garden of Eden. It has been associated with long life and memory in classical times, and burned as incense to drive away evil spirits. It was so highly valued that it was one of the precious gifts brought to the Christ Child. For centuries it has been used to perfume the air in religious rites and services in the Catholic Church and in Jewish Synagogues.
Frankincense likes to grow in well-drained or dry soil in full sun. It grows best in temperatures no lower than about 55 degrees, and can adapt to growing in a pot and taken indoors during cold months
The resin known as Frankincense exudes naturally from the bark. This gum resin can be collected at any time of the year, but is said to yield the best quality in the hottest months and from the driest areas.
It is a bitter, pungent warming herb that stimulates the circulation, calms the nerves and has antiseptic, expectorant and decongestant effects. It is used internally for bronchial and urinary infections. Externally it is an inhalant for excess mucous and douche for vaginal infections. In Chinese medicine, it is used internally for menstrual pain and externally for injuries, skin eruptions and as a wash for gum, mouth and throat complaints.  In Ayurvedic medicine it is a  rejuvenative. Frankincense is used in anti-wrinkle creams, incense and perfumery. The essential oil is used commercially to flavor candies, bakery products, desserts, ice cream and soft drinks. The essential oil is also used therapeutically for respiratory problems, aging skin, inflammation and wounds and has even been known to draw out tumors when used by very knowledgeable natural practitioners.
Some information from “Encyclopedia of Herbs” by Deni Brown
